How much you can buy in one day in California

The three numbers

California sets one daily limit for adult-use customers, and it has three parts:

• 28.5 grams of non-concentrated cannabis — flower, in other words. That is an ounce, near enough.
• 8 grams of concentrated cannabis. Concentrate covers vape cartridges, extracts, and the cannabis inside an edible.
• 6 immature plants, if a store sells clones.

They are separate allowances, not a shared pool. Buying an ounce of flower does not use up any of your concentrate limit, and the other way round.

The limit resets daily. It applies per customer, per day, across the state — not per store and not per visit, which is the part people are usually surprised by.

Why an edible counts against concentrate

This is the one that catches people out. The 8-gram concentrate limit is measured by the weight of the cannabis extract in the product, not the weight of the product itself. A 100 mg gummy tin does not weigh 8 grams of concentrate; the extract inside it weighs a fraction of a gram. So the practical effect is that a normal edible order barely touches the limit, while a large cartridge order can.

Medical patients have a higher limit

A patient with a valid physician's recommendation or a state medical identification card is allowed more than the adult-use limits above, and the medical allowance is a different figure set under the medical programme rather than the adult-use one. Bring the card or the recommendation to the counter and the limit applied to your order changes accordingly.

What happens if an order goes over

Nothing dramatic — the sale is simply capped. Every licensed retailer in California is required to track purchase limits at the point of sale, so the system flags an over-limit basket before payment rather than after. You are asked to drop something or split the purchase across days.

What a licensed store cannot do is wave it through. A retailer that does is risking its licence, which is a reasonable proxy for how seriously to take any shop that offers.

What to bring

A government ID showing you are 21 or over is the requirement for adult-use. Passports, driver's licences and state ID cards all work; a photo of one on your phone does not. Under 21 with a physician's recommendation, you need the recommendation or medical ID card as well as your ID, and you must be 18 or over.
